INFORMATION ABOUT VIJAYAWADA

Vijayawada, the third largest city in Andhra Pradesh is located on the banks of the river Krishna. Vijaywada literally meaning 'The Place of Victory', derived its name from the presiding deity Kanaka Durga also known as Vijaya. Earlier known as Bezwada it was an important centre of the Vishnukundin rulers in the 5C -6C and the headquarters of the Early Chalukyas of Badami. The city is a major railway Junction in South India. Vijayawada is a thriving business centre and a convenient base to visit the varied historical sites in the vicinity.

VIJAYAWADA HISTORY

The discovery of pre-historic remains belonging to the stone-age man all along the banks of the Krishna River from Machilipatnam to Nagarjuna Sagar provides evidence that this part of the river valley was inhabited by the stone age man. Besides being an important religious centre for Buddhists and Hindus, Vijayawada is also a centre of Andhra culture. The Chalukyas of Kalyan and the great king Sri Krishna Deva Raya once conquered this place, and the famous Chinese traveler Xuanzang (Hsuan-Tsang) visited this place in 639 when Buddhism was at its zenith in the region.

VIJAYAWADA TOURISM

The Places of Interest and Sight Seeing

  • Bhavani Island : It is located at a distance of 4 km from Vijayawada city. The island is situated upstream of River Krishna, close to the Prakasam Barrage and is perhaps the largest island on a river, with an area of about 133acres. The placid waters make it an ideal picnic spot, besides there is extensive forest coverage, shimmering ponds and rolling meadows. Boat riding facility is also available here.

  • Prakasam Barrage :Located on the outskirts of Vijayawada, Prakasam Barrage is a 1223.5 m long, modern regulator and road bridge built across the River Krishna. Its beautiful lake and three canals flowing through Vijayawada give the city a Venetian look. The barrage first completed in 1855, is one of the earliest major irrigation projects in Southern India. It was named after the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam. The scheme irrigates nearly one million ha, converting the Krishna delta into the richest granary in Andhra Pradesh.

  • Kondapalli Fort : Kondapalli Fort is situated in the Kondapalli village at a distance of 16km from Vijayawada city, towards the west side. It is believed to have been built by Prolaya Vema Reddy during the 14th Century. The king used to visit this fort for relaxation and recreation. Later, the fort was used as a business centre and then again as a military training base by the British rulers. Situated on a hill, the fort has an impressive three storied rock tower. It passed hands successively and was witness to the rise and fall of many dynasties. Near the fort there is a Dargah of a Persian Saint, Gareeb Sahib. The village is also famous for its wooden toys.

  • Top Gandhi Stupa : The 15.8ft tall Gandhi Stupa situated on Gandhi Hill, formerly known as Orr Hill was built in memory of the Father of the nation. This monument was unveiled in 1968. There are stone slabs with Gandhiji's teachings inscribed on them. Gandhi Memorial Library, a sound and Light Show on Mahatma Gandhi's life and a Planetarium are the other attractions. From the top of the hill, one can get a bird's eye view of the city. A toy train skirts the hill.

  • Victoria Jubilee Museum : The Victoria Jubilee Museum in Vijayawada is an archaeological museum established as early as 1887. It is located on the Bander Road. Even after the passage of more than one century since it was established, the museum continues to attract and awe visitors with its varied and unique collection of arts and artifacts. The exhibits here range from pre-historic tools, pottery, stone and copper plates, gold and silver coins, arms and armory, textiles and coins, manuscripts and stone cut writings, objects obtained form excavations at historical sites, paintings etc. There is a colossal granite statue of the Buddha and also a well preserved standing white limestone figure of the Buddha from Alluru, dating from 3C- 4C. An idol of Lord Shiva, beautifully sculptured and believed to belong to the 4th and 5th centuries is another attraction. The entry to the museum is free
