ERODE HISTORY

A number of legends are associated with the nomenclature of the district of Erode, many of which also have certain religious connotations. Historically, the earliest references to the district can be traced back to as early as 850 A.D., when the district came under the reign of the Cholas with its headquarters at Dharmapuram. The following centuries saw several bloody battles as generations after generations of rulers waged wars to get the control of this prestigious province. Due to the battles waged by countless generations of the Marathas, British and the rulers of several provinces like Mysore, the once rich and beautiful region of Erode faced a ruin that was to an extent recovered from during the reign of the British, when much of Erode’s erstwhile prestige was reinstated.
